Every day, eBay sends out tens of millions of emails to customers globally. However, the existing process meant that each piece of communication had to be created manually from scratch. This made delivery slow and allowed for a greater rate of human error than acceptable. Feed was approached by eBay to find a solution to this archaic approach to delivery.
The creation of a Global Email Template. A comprehensive library of pre-designed, built and QA'd modules, enabling creatives around the globe to efficiently design error-free emails suitable for any market or message.
Step one in the process was a complete creative audit of the existing emails eBay put out globally. By looking at the work each region creates, we identified the fundamental elements needed to build each piece of communication, regardless of the language. By completely redesigning these fundamental elements, or "atoms", and then later grouping them together into molecules and then organisms, we were able to create a comprehensive library of modules suitable for any message. More information here on Brad Frost's excellent Atomic Design thinking which inspired this approach.
As the same modules would be used on both mobile and desktop, we needed to ensure content was properly optimised. Particular attention was paid to creating a design system that functioned universally across the device spectrum. Each module has a desktop and mobile variant, but typography remains consistent throughout.
Once the new sitemap had been created, we turned our attention to allowing users to navigate through the site with minimal friction. On mobile devices navigation links were organised into a scrollable list where as the utility elements, such as search functionality, were fixed to the bottom of the open menu for ease of use.
On desktop devices, the added real estate allowed us to create a content-rich mega menu, utilizing imagery to provide clarity to the user. It also gave us a chance to surface relevant offers and promotions within the menu itself, providing the business with additional ways to convert users.
As an overwhelming amount of the content that goes into each email is pulled in dynamically, we needed to devise a system that could house this information is an elegant and accessible manner. A whole suite of cards was designed, each crafted with a specific content type in mind, meaning that no matter the message the design remained consistent.
The Global Email Template is used every day to communicate with millions of customers. After its implementation, the CRM team achieved its first-ever 0% error rate for a quarter. It has sped up design and production drastically and functions as a living document, continually growing and adapting to support the brand.
